Adam Levy is the District Attorney of Putnam County. After the Sheriff of his County, Donald Smith, accused Mr. Levy in interfering in the prosecution of one of Levy's friends, Alex Hossu, who was falsely accused of raping an adolescent, Mr. Levy filed a defamation lawsuit against the Sheriff.

Mr. Levy contends that the Sheriff intentionally defamed him and accused him of a heinous action, that is, interfering in a criminal investigation, despite the fact that, immediately upon learning of the rape accusation, Levy recused himself from the case.

This past spring, a petit jury acquitted Hossu of all counts of rape in a case prosecuted by the Westchester County DA's office with assistance from Sheriff Smith's department. The Levy defamation case is pending in Putnam County Supreme Court.
